SUCCESS STORIES

Snowmobile Console

Challenges:

-      Developing a mold for the molding of a snowmobile console of very large dimension with a new resin (Surlyn Reflection), making it possible to provide a ?high gloss? finish that eliminates the costly painting operation;
-      Obtaining a polished mold finish of level SPI A-1 with a standard P20 steel type ordered initially for an SPI A-2 finish;
-      Managing to counter the considerable adhesion of the resin that causes major problems for this size of part during injection;
-      Managing to use the available press (2500T) despite the necessary higher tonnage required for this resin.

Realizations:

-      Having produced a tooling that permits the successful production of parts enabling the customer to make savings of over 80$/part due to the elimination of painting;
-      Having developed, via a network of outside technical experts, a method for achieving an SPI A-1 finish with a grade of steel usually not suitable for this type of finish;
-      Developing the optimal combination to ensure flawless extraction of the part despite the extremely high adhesion of the resin and the geometry proper to the problem of extraction;
-      Designing and developing an innovative system of sealing joints enabling the client to mold on its existing molding equipment. All of this was necessary after the arrival of a new datum during the design by the resin supplier at the level of the closing force requirements due to its material;
-      Having demystified the mold design and molding parameter required for this new resin and successfully performed the first design with this resin for BRP which was then usedon all new snowmobile platforms for an aesthetics/optimal cost configuration.
